Terms of Use & Safety Disclaimer
The rules for using this site, and an important warning about following repair instructions.
Please read section 2 before attempting any repair described on this site. Bicycles are vehicles, and incorrectly performed maintenance on brakes, steering, forks or frames can cause serious injury or death.
1. About this site
TwoWheelGuide is an information website. We publish guides about choosing, maintaining and riding bicycles. We do not sell bikes, parts, tools, repairs, courses or memberships, and we are not a bicycle retailer or workshop. All content is provided for general informational and educational purposes only.
2. Safety disclaimer
Bicycle maintenance carries real risk
Our repair guides are written for people working on their own bicycles with ordinary tools, and are tested before publication. They are not a substitute for professional mechanical training, and cannot account for the specific condition, age, model or history of your bicycle.
Safety-critical components
- Brakes — pads, cables, hydraulic systems and rotors
- Steering — headset, stem, handlebars
- Forks and frame — including any suspected crash damage or cracking
- Wheels — spoke tension, hub bearings, quick-release and thru-axle fastening
- Seatpost, saddle and pedals — where failure would cause loss of control
If you are not completely confident that work on any of these is sound, have it checked by a qualified bicycle mechanic before you ride. A brake that fails at a junction, or a stem that slips while descending, is a life-changing event.
Carbon fibre and torque
Carbon components require correctly torqued fasteners. Over-tightening can crush or crack carbon in ways invisible from the outside that fail suddenly later. Use a torque wrench set to the manufacturer’s specification.
Manufacturer instructions take precedence
Where our guidance differs from the documentation supplied with your bicycle or its components, follow the manufacturer’s instructions. They know the specific product; we’re describing the general case.
You assume the risk
By following any procedure described here you accept that you do so entirely at your own risk, and that you are responsible for assessing whether you have the skill, tools and conditions to perform it safely.
3. Road safety and local law
Our skills guides describe general technique. Road traffic law varies substantially between countries and regions. You are responsible for knowing and obeying the law where you ride. Nothing here constitutes legal advice.
4. No professional advice
Nothing on this site constitutes professional mechanical, medical, legal or financial advice. If you have a medical condition that may affect your ability to cycle safely, consult a healthcare professional.
5. Accuracy of content
We work hard to keep guides accurate and review each at least annually. Even so, we make no warranty that content is complete, accurate or up to date at any given moment. If you find an error, please tell us.
6. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, TwoWheelGuide and its contributors are not liable for any loss, injury or damage arising from your use of this site or reliance on its content. Nothing in these terms excludes liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for any other liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.
